Three Points of Contact Rule: The Do’s and Don’ts

When using a ladder, make sure to pay attention. Use the ladder safely and ensure the ladder is in good working condition.
The Three Points of Contact rule exists for safety. Following this rule helps employees reduce and prevent falls. Below find a “do’s and don’ts” outline for the Three Points of Contact rule:
Do:
- Keep three points of contact with the ladder: two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand
- Place dry hands and shoes on ladder rungs/steps
- Assign second person to hold bottom of ladder
- Climb slowly keeping body weight centered between side rails
- Climb slowly; do not skip rungs/steps
- Face forward; grip rungs, not siderails
- Place ladder legs on solid, even ground
Don’t:
- Move ladder while in use
- Overreach to side; remain centered
- Overload ladder; consider ladder load ratings
- Turn or lean away from front of ladder
- Carry tools or other items in hands
- Stand higher than indicated on step marking the highest standing level
- have more than one person on the ladder at one time
