Retail stores are not typically considered an “unsafe” work environment. However, department stores and main street retail stores can present many hazards, as with any industry. Each workplace is different, and employers should know what dangers exist to create a safe workplace. Here are some of the most common hazards in the retail industry:
- Ladders - all employees should be trained on how to use a ladder properly and safely, including the 4 to 1 rule (4ft up = 1ft out) and correct ladder inspection.
- Overstocking Shelves - employees should be taught proper stocking techniques such as heavy items on the bottom and light items on the top.
- Cuts - box cutter and knife safety should be an emphasis in any training program.
- Electric Shock - unqualified employees should never attempt to fix any electrical issues.
- Standing - employees should be given frequent breaks to sit down and soft mats to stand on.
- Lifting - proper lifting procedures should be stressed to all employees.
