Ladder Safety Statistics
With March being National Ladder Safety Month, we thought it would be essential to review some ladder injury statistics in the workplace. While ladders are one of the most dangerous tools in the workforce, ladder safety is often overlooked. In the last fiscal year, OSHA reports there were 2,026 citations written involving ladders. OSHA has mandated employee training, had manufacturers place safety stickers on the ladders, and required documented inspections. Yet, every year companies receive OSHA citations concerning the use of ladders, and every year employees are injured and killed using ladders.
Here are some statistics on ladder injuries:
- Over the last 10 years, ladder-related injuries have increased 50%.
- 50% of all ladder-related injuries were due to carrying items up the ladder.
- 20% of all falls involve ladders.
- There are, on average, about 22,000 ladder injuries per year.
- The average cost of a non-fatal ladder injury is $41,000.
Below are the 4 main types of ladder accidents:
- Selecting the wrong type of ladder
- Using worn or damaged ladders
- Incorrect use of ladders
- Incorrect placement of ladders
