Forklift Tips

- Forklift operators must receive training at least every 3 years per OSHA regulations, regardless of the amount of experience the operator has. If a new employee has recently received training at a previous employer, you must still document site specific training at your facility for that employee.
- An inspection checklist should be kept on the forklift and the forklift should be inspected prior to use for each shift that it will be utilized.
- Forklift operators are required to wear seatbelts every time the forklift is in use.
- When leaving a forklift unattended, always remember to lower the forks, shut off the engine, set the brake, and remove the key.
- Never park in areas that block aisleways and exit doors.
- Keep forks 4 to 6 inches off the floor when traveling.
- Be sure to keep the mast at least 10 feet away from overhead power lines.
- Monitor pedestrian traffic at all times and assume that they never see you.
- Always know the load limits of your lift and be aware of the weight and distribution of the loads you are working with.
- The recognized indoor speed limit is 5MPH unless otherwise indicated.
