Since we are wrapping up 2019, we wanted to touch on one of the main areas where we find deficiencies in our members’ safety programs during loss control visits, FORKLIFT SAFETY. We insure many clients who utilize forklifts or other types of powered industrial trucks in various capacities of operation. We also have numerous claims each year related to incidents involving powered industrial trucks.
Forklifts and similar types of equipment can be extremely dangerous when not used in the proper manner. These pieces of machinery are heavy and unforgiving when encountering people. One of the best ways to try to control and minimize hazards associated with forklifts is to implement an effective safety and training program to ensure those who are required to operate them and those who work around them are trained properly and that these employees are trained in the use, functions, and hazards of powered industrial trucks. Having an effective forklift safety program includes the following:
- A written forklift safety program complete with operating procedures, training guidelines, safety rules and procedures, and maintenance information.
- An effective and documented training program with detailed site-specific information.
- An examination to measure the effectiveness of the training program.
- Documented evaluation of the employee operating the equipment.

Having an effective training program allows you to be proactive in your forklift safety efforts as opposed to having to react after an incident has already occurred.
