AlaCOMP Drug Free Program

AlaCOMP’s Drug Free Credit is available for all members that implement a drug testing policy. To do this is simple. You, as the employer, would inform all your employees that after a work-related accident a post-drug test will be performed.

Helpful tips on post-accident screening guidelines:

  • Have a written Drug-Testing Policy. We recommend having all employees sign your company’s drug testing policy annually and place it in their personnel file.
  • Always test the injured employee immediately following the accident. We recommend testing within 24 hours of the accident.
  • Employers have the right to direct care. Your company’s authorized treating physician should be able to perform the appropriate drug screen.
  • Post where your employee should go if there is a work-related accident. This should include not only your authorized treating physician for normal hours, but an emergency room for afterhours or more serious injuries. Click here to see an example of medical protocol.
  • In-house drug screening is not admissible. If you choose to do in-house screening, all positive results should be sent immediately to the authorized treating physician for a follow-up test.
  • All other medical treatment should continue as normal.

Why do post-drug testing?

Drug screening can not only help save the employer money on the bottom line, but this is just one of several resources to better help prevent workplace accidents. The Workers’ Compensation Act gives the employer and the carrier tools to mitigate claims caused by someone who is intoxicated or under the influence. Employees who are under the influence may not be entitled to compensation benefits. Therefore, it is imperative that employers have guidelines set so that testing can occur immediately. Our adjusters can then handle the claim benefits appropriately based on the results.

Don’t forget all members can qualify for the AlaCOMP Drug Free Credit by implementing a drug free program.
